BMW Tune Ups

"Tune-up" means something a little different on a modern BMW than it did on older carbureted engines, but the goal is the same — restoring the engine to peak efficiency and smooth operation as wear items reach the end of their service life. On today's BMWs, that typically centers on spark plugs, ignition coils, air and fuel filters, and a full diagnostic scan to catch anything the onboard computer has flagged but hasn't yet triggered a dashboard warning for.

Spark plugs on most modern BMW engines are rated for roughly 60,000 miles, though turbocharged engines under harder use can wear them faster. Worn plugs or a failing ignition coil typically show up as a rough idle, a noticeable misfire under acceleration, reduced fuel economy, or hesitation when you press the accelerator. Left unaddressed, a misfiring cylinder can damage the catalytic converter over time, turning a relatively affordable tune-up into a much more expensive repair.

A proper BMW tune-up at SL Autoworks starts with a full diagnostic scan using BMW-specific software, not a generic code reader, so we can see live data on individual cylinder performance rather than just a stored fault code. From there we replace spark plugs and coils as needed using OEM-quality parts, inspect and replace air and cabin filters, and check fuel trim data to catch developing issues with fuel delivery before they become drivability problems.

We also use the visit to check for common BMW-specific issues that mimic ignition problems, including vacuum leaks and carbon buildup on the intake valves — an issue that affects most direct-injection engines, BMW's included, since fuel no longer washes over the valves the way it did on older port-injected engines.
