BMW Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts do more than smooth out bumps — they're a core part of your BMW's handling and braking performance. Worn suspension components increase stopping distance, cause uneven tire wear, and let your BMW's weight shift unpredictably under hard cornering or braking, which undermines the precise handling BMW is built around in the first place.

The warning signs are usually gradual rather than sudden, which is part of why worn shocks often go unaddressed longer than they should. Common symptoms include a noticeably bouncier ride, the front end diving more than it used to under braking, clunking or knocking noises over bumps, and uneven or cupped tire wear that shows up as a pattern rather than even tread loss. If you press down firmly on a corner of the car and it bounces more than once or twice before settling, that's a reasonable sign your shocks or struts are due for inspection.

Many modern BMWs use Electronic Damper Control (EDC), an adaptive suspension system that adjusts damping firmness in real time based on driving conditions and selected driving mode. EDC-equipped shocks are more complex than a standard shock absorber and require specialist diagnostic equipment to properly test and calibrate after replacement — a generic aftermarket shock swap on an EDC-equipped BMW can leave the system throwing suspension fault codes even if the physical repair was done correctly.

At SL Autoworks, we diagnose your specific suspension setup first, confirm whether you have standard or electronically adjustable dampers, and use the correct parts and procedure for your model — including any necessary calibration after installation on EDC-equipped vehicles. We also inspect related components like control arm bushings and sway bar end links during the same visit, since worn suspension components rarely fail in isolation.

SL Autoworks serves BMW owners throughout North Little Rock, Little Rock, and Pulaski County. If your ride feels softer or bouncier than it used to, call (501) 214-1091 or schedule a suspension inspection online.
