DIY 2011–2017 BMW Key Fob Battery Change / Replacement

BMW CAR KEYS

If your BMW key fob is starting to lose range, respond slowly, or stop working consistently, it may be time to replace the battery. For many 2011–2017 BMW key fobs, this is a quick DIY job that only takes a few minutes.

At SL Autoworks, we work on BMW vehicles every day, and this is one of the simpler maintenance items many owners can handle at home with the right battery and a small screwdriver.

What You’ll Need

For this BMW key fob battery replacement, you will need:

2450 Battery: https://amzn.to/4mOsc7E
Small screwdriver: https://amzn.to/2SoeBpz

A small flathead screwdriver works best. One from a phone repair kit or small electronics tool kit is usually the right size.

Step 1: Remove the Physical Key

Start by holding your BMW key fob and pressing the release button. This allows you to slide the physical key out of the fob.

Set the key aside while you work on opening the battery compartment.

Step 2: Open the Key Fob

Once the physical key is removed, look inside the opening for a small tab. Use your small flathead screwdriver to gently press down on that tab.

Carefully pry the back cover open. Be gentle so you do not damage the plastic housing.

Step 3: Remove the Old Battery

With the back cover removed, you should now see the battery. Take out the old battery and note how it is positioned before installing the replacement.

Step 4: Install the New 2450 Battery

Insert the new 2450 battery into the same position as the old one. Make sure it sits securely in place.

Using the correct battery size is important, so confirm your fob uses a 2450 battery before replacing it.

Step 5: Reassemble the Key Fob

When closing the fob, line up the small blade or tab on the back cover with the slot at the bottom of the key fob.

Once aligned, press the cover firmly until it snaps back into place. Give it a good squeeze to make sure everything is seated properly.

Final Check

After the key fob is back together, test the buttons to make sure the fob is working correctly. If the key still does not work after replacing the battery, there may be another issue with the fob, vehicle receiver, or key programming.
